The Rawhide Game Continues..
For anyone out there who wonders - I could still locate one rawhide on late Sunday evening. Around noon on Sunday we went out to the Greek Festival and when we came home there were still two raw hides -One rawhide outside, one still remained on the floor in the living room.
A quick side note from a true blooded Norwegian, I was dismayed when I got to the Greek festival and in the sanctuary of the Greek Orthodox Church there was a lecture on how to make lutefisk - why would you wreck a good Greek buffet talking about Norsk Lye Soaked Fish...it is just not right - we quickly exited the church and headed for music filled tents and Gyros, Salad and Spanikopita food lines - happily enjoying the smells wafting from the grills...
We arrived home around 2pm - Still two unchewed, gnawless rawhide bones in our midst....what do they do when we are gone? ....They needed some exercise so I went outside and pulled our "dog" car out of the garage - some people call it the toaster mobile, but it is our burnt orange Honda Element. Mind you - this car can be hosed out after a good mud bath from the dogs- it is perfect for our dogstyle life. I grabbed some water and opened the back doors of the car. When I went back into the house the dogs were prancing around - I think Chewie had the raw hide in his mouth...Then I put our dogs on leashes and Kristin helped load them up into the car. Remember that image of meringue whipped up - well, that is Gromit after he has been bored for a couple of hours and knows the dog park is in his sights...so yes, sometimes it takes two to get them into the car.
We went to Battle Creek - this dog park has hills and mucky ponds and woods and a very sweet fragrant pine grove that always reminds me of Bonanza when I pass through it. Chewie loved the ponds and enjoyed a nice soak in between ball retrieving swims. Gromit just gets very excited around water - he doesn't swim, he tries to jump on top of the water. He got so excited he went out and grabbed Chewie's ball and raced around the edge of the pond and through the woods with Chewie close behind. The park is big enough that the dogs were cleaned up by the time we got back to the car. By the time we got home they could barely keep their heads up. They walked in the door slurped up a bowl of water and promptly collapsed on the floor. No one making a play for the rawhide yet.
Kristin and I spent the evening with our neighbors. We went to dinner at our neighbors and had a fabulous Indian Sambar dinner -the masala was made fresh that day - mmmmm.... and when we arrived home from dinner the rawhide game restarted - from what I could tell... there was only one rawhide visible - and it had been gnawed a bit - Chewie took it upstairs to hang out with Kristin and chew away on it. Gromit stayed downstairs with me because we both prefer non-reality based television which was being watched upstairs. .The Animal Planet show - It's Me or the Dog - give Gromit nightmares - I have no idea what kind of conversation or strategy takes place when the dogs are out of site, but suddenly at about 9:30 pm Chewie came marching downstairs and made a huge arc through the living room, showing off the rawhide to me and Gromit who submissively looked away. Chewie then went into the piano study and promptly set about chewing the only rawhide right in front of Gromit - Gromit watched for a minute and then dropped his head to the floor and fell asleep. Chewie continued his relentless chewing for another half hour. When I woke them both up for the final outside of the night the rawhide left with Chewie and I have not seen any since.
Today - no raw hides, but lots of dog...well, shall we say rawhide gastrointestinal distress - uff dah! I have no idea where the second rawhide went - but suffice to say that both dogs had equal roles in the need to freshen the air in our house - there are remnants of rawhide on the couch in Kristin's office. In all fairness I took two raw hides out, one for each dog but they always hide one. I am sure we will see it eventually in the house, Chewie will uncover it from some buried spot in the yard. I am not sure what type of game this is that they play but it does appear that only one dog gets his bone at a time...
